What is quadball?
Quadball, formerly known as quidditch, is a mixed gender contact sport with a unique incorporation of elements from rugby, dodgeball, basketball, and handball. A quadball team is made up of seven athletes who play with "brooms" between their legs at all times, and earn points by throwing a ball through one of three hoops. While the game can appear chaotic to the casual observer, once familiar with the basic rules, quidditch is an exciting sport to watch and even more exciting to play.
History
Our sport of quadball was based off the fictional sport famously played in the Harry Potter book and movie series, and was created in 2005 at Middlebury College. Since then, it has grown into an internationally played sport governed by associations like United States Quadball (USQ), Major League Quadball (MLQ), and the International Quadball Association (IQA). As of July 19, 2022, quadball officially became the new name, and with the name change comes exciting opportunities for the growth of the sport.
Title 9 3/4 and Gender Max rules
"Title IX additionally continues to exclude those who do not identify with the binary gender system. Through Title 9 ¾, USQ is more inclusive to transgender and nonbinary individuals by using gender as opposed to sex in policies. "
- USQ
"A team may not have more than four players who identify as the same gender in play at any point during the game. This gender maximum rule ensures that teams are working to recruit and to field a team that has diversity; the rule is also written in such a way that it does not exclude individuals who do not identify within the gender binary."
- USQ
Youth
USQ and MLQ have developed gameplay rules and regulations for youth quadball, and Chicago Youth Quadball's mission is to grow the youth sector of the sport so that quadball can be enjoyed, both formally and informally, by people of all ages.
